Travel Trailer vs RV
Many people assume that RVs are the only way to tailgate. Admittedly, the RV is the most common vehicle chosen by tailgaters. I have used both to tailgate and through my experience I can give some pros and cons for the travel trailer from my point of view.
Travel Trailer Pros
- Extra Vehicle: You have a vehicle you can use once you arrive, so you are not limited to walking.
- Extra Storage: You can use the inside of the travel trailer to store gear you will need at the tailgate.
- Sleeping Capacity: Travel trailers generally have more sleeping capacity than Class-A RVs. This is a big issue for me since I could have four people or ten. I never know.
- Price: Travel trailers are cheap! You can pick up a nice one for between $8,000 – $20,000.
Travel Trailer Cons
- The Hitch: Hooking up the travel trailer to the tow vehicle and unhitching at your destination takes time and effort. This really delays the start of the party.
- Pit Stops: Unable to use the travel trailer restroom while travelling. This has to be my number one reason for absolutely loving the RV.
- Driving: It is more difficult to tow a travel trailer than drive an RV. Just ask my wife.
- The Generator: Travel trailers generally don’t have a built-in generator which means you have to worry about taking one with you.
- Generator Gas: Most RVs pull the gas for the generator from the main RV tank so you never need to worry about gas cans. It seems like a small thing, but having to get extra gas and continuously fill up your generator is a pain.
